According to local sports researcher Bob Schichtel pictured are three very successful coaches in the 1949-50 season. From left to right, Jim VanderHull of State Finalist Godwin Heights, Grand Rapids Central Coach Dan Nameth of the City Co-Champions and John Hoekje of the Class C State Champion East Grand Rapids Pioneers. Hoekje would be honored by the Grand Rapids Herald as the Coach of the Year over Grand Rapids Catholic Central Football Coach Ted Sowle.
