According to local sports researcher Bob Schichtel these are some of the 1947 Grand Rapids South High Trojans meeting with their coach, Pat Patterson, crouching. The players are, front row, l to r: Jack VanEss, Bruce Bigford, Mel Hartger, and Cecil Marsh. The back row features Jack Nelson, Don Hondorp, and Frank Pellerito. Jack VanEss left school after his junior year to join the war effort, returned after service to complete school and participate in athletics. He is a member of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.
