Description:
Spectators. According to local sports researcher Bob Schichtel, This was the place to be on game nights in Grand Rapids. In this game played at South High it looks like a capacity crowd. Capacity crowds were the norm in the City League in the 40's and 50's. Gyms were smaller but crowds were consistently large and enthusiastic. The City League had seven schools that were mostly within two to three miles of each other and had highly competitive rivalries. Local high school basketball was a great form of entertainment particularly before television. Further, they offered an opportunity to celebrate your community spirit during the Depression, WWII and after.
