According to local sports researcher Bob Schichtel in 1950 Grand Rapids made a foray into professional basketball and is an organizational/promotional meeting of some of the principals hoping to bring pro basketball to the area. From left to right, J. Doxie Moore, Commissioner of the National Professional Basketball League, George Glamack of Indianapolis who was seeking the franchise, Howard Phillips of the Besteman Produce Rec Team, and Chuck Bult, Calvin College men's basketball coach. The meeting was held at Cascade Country Club. Grand Rapids would secure a franchise, the Hornets, but they lasted less than a full season in 1950-51.
