[British men o' war off Long Island] / Wm. Paine.
Two British frigates and a ship of the line engage several smaller American vessels as a merchantman burns in the background. According to accompanying dealer information, this painting represents the British blockade of Long Island. Ms. note on verso: "'Anchored off the coast of Long Island, we succeeded in drawing off the enemy's gunboats who had taken possession of her. [signed] Wm. Paine.' Written in pencil to back of drawing pasted onto this sheet."; Painting affixed to backing paper, obscuring original ms. inscription.
