Half-length portrait of a young man. Possibly Charles Chester (potential aliases Charles Custer and LeRoy Smith). Light hand coloring.; Case: leather with geometric pattern and hook-and-eye lock, Cooke & Emerson nonpareil mat, red velvet pad with impressed design.; Includes three contemporary newspaper clippings. One clipping concerned the arrest and subsequent conviction of a man who called himself Charles Chester in Raisin Township for robbery. The second clipping stated that a man named Chas. Custer pled guilty to stealing money in Raisin Township and was sentenced to one year in Jackson State Prison. The third clipping from the Mason Times described the daring escape of a young thief named LeRoy Smith from the custody of the local Sheriff.; Title devised by cataloger.
