Chart of the Straits of Magellan.

Chart of the Straits of Magellan.

Description:

Pen and ink map showing geographical details and some soundings of the straits.; Appears to have been drawn by the same person who made a chart of part of the Falkland Islands, also from the Shelburne Papers.; Map was removed from vol. 75 of the Shelburne Papers but does not seem to have accompanied any of the documents in the volume.; Formerly attributed to Capt. Samuel Wallis, it seems more likely to have been drawn during the Commodore John Byron expedition of 1764-66 since two of the incidents listed on the map proper concern this party and the anchorages listed in the references coincide with the account in Byron's journal.
