Group portrait of "H.M.S. Pinafore" cast on stage with orchestra, Central High School, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Black-and-white photograph of Kalamazoo Central High School cast members on stage during a rehearsal. View shows approximately three rows of cast members in a semicircle on stage. All are wearing costumes: women wear long dresses and men where sailors or navy uniforms. View includes the orchestra pit. The event was reported in the Kalamazoo Gazette, May 29, 1943, page 3 and includes the names of principle actors. Only a few of the names have been matched to the students pictured: John W. Batdorf, standing about the 11th person from the left and wears a dark uniform; Louise Goss, standing about 12th person from the left, hand in hand with John Batdorf; Keith Dinda, wearing a dark uniform and feathered hat and standing in the center of the back row, arm in arm with Patricia Westerberg; Art Barton (playing the character Dick Deadeye), stands half bent forward in back row and wears an eye patch over his right eye. The students were performing the comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore (or the Lass that Loved a Sailor) originally by Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert. The photograph was taken for Miss Esther Nelson, director of choral music at the high school.
