Marriage Certificate of Theodore and Ethel (Beverly) Burgess
Description:
A printed certificate of marriage between Theodore T. Burgess and Ethel I. Beverly, both of Grand Rapids. They were married in Kent County on June 1, 1904. The certificate was signed by W.A. Bruce, Pastor, A.M.E. Church. The listed witnesses were Ralph Hawkins and John Beverly. City directories list Theodore working as an “elevator man.” He was around 23 years old. It is not clear if the “John Beverly” who witnessed the marriage was Ethel's father (who did not live in Grand Rapids at the time) or her brother John, who would have been around 20.
