R. H. C. Davis Notebook 20
R. H. C. Davis's field notebook surveying churches and cathedrals throughout parts of England, Germany, Switzerland, Greece and Italy. His title on the first page reads: "Vol. XXV". The entries begin on September 11, 1949 and continues intermittently to September 4, 1951, skips to April 4, 1958 and continues through September 31, 1958. Several entries are undated, and entry for King's College (Cambridge) is dated March 8, 1938, with two later dates on August 19, 1958 and in 1949. The entry includes the following note: "with R.A.B.M., L.M., E.M.D." The entries are written on the left-facing page (lined) with later additions, sketches or added material written on the right-facing (blank) page. The notebook begins with a list of "Books referred to" and is followed by the main entries. Most entries begin with a chronological list of key dates related to the building's history. Following is a summary of architectural elements based on observation and research, along with (occasionally) sketches. A major theme is an analysis of historical evidence in order to place the "phases" of the building into history. The longest entry and a major part of the notebook details Ely Cathedral. Other themes include: the site's most striking features, mason marks, a critical look at other researcher’s interpretations and conclusions, and his own theories and conclusions. Entries are written predominately in English, with some place names, words or inscriptions in Latin or Greek. The notebook includes a number of letters written by the following: A. H. Wiles?, John H.
