R. H. C. Davis Notebook 21
R. H. C. Davis's field notebook surveying cathedrals, priories, and castles throughout parts of Germany, Austria, Franconia, Italy, and England. His title on the first page of the notebook reads: "XXIX." The entries begin on August 23, 1965 and continue intermittently to December 3, 1977. A couple entries have multiple dates indicating when Davis revisited the sites. The entries are written on the front of the page with corrections or later additions from research added on the back. Most entries begin with chronological list of dates and mark key events such as restoration and remodeling campaigns, destruction by war or natural disaster, and when additions were made. The chronology is followed by a summary of architectural elements based on observations and research and, occasionally, reinforced with illustrations. Themes include architectural history for each site, "impressive" features, examinations of mason marks, Norman influences, Roman ruins through England, the private treasure of the imperial and royal house of Austria, a brief history of the surrounding towns, a critical look at other researcher's interpretations and conclusions, his own theories and conclusions, historical context, and some references to published archaeological discoveries. The entry for the Parish Church of Breedon-on-the-Hill includes the following note: Revisited with ENL? and John Blair. Throughout the notebook are inserted materials. The majority of the text is written in English with an inscription written in Latin.
