R. H. C. Davis Notebook 6
R. H. C. Davis's hardcover notebook describing architectural details of Islamic buildings in North Africa. His title on the first page reads: "Volume XIII, From Cairo to Carthage ". The notes were written from August 28, 1942 to February 8, 1944, though some entries have later dates when the Davis revisited the sites. Additional loose material is inserted throughout the notebook. The entries are organized by location and include many illustrations. The entry's content includes bibliographic references continued from volume 12, notes from a variety of scholarly sources, quotes from reference material from noted scholars such as George Marcais, K. A. C. Creswell and Claude Pionssot, repeated patterns and motifs carried over from past eras or locations, a timeline for most of the sites, and an brief interpretation of what Davis observed or learned. Entries are written on the front of each page with corrections or later additions added on the back. Several maps were inserted throughout the notebook for the following sites: Kairouan, Carthage, Thuburbo Majus, and Dugga (Thudda). Loose material at the end of the notebook includes newspapers, pamphlets, photograph of the Roman Theater at Sabratha, and a booklet on Sabratha. Each of the pieces includes a date handwritten by the author.
