Jerome Townsend was the son of Lewis and Maria Townsend, prominent farmers in Marengo County, Marshall, Michigan. Photograph was taken by Seneca B. Smith of Marshall, Michigan. Jerome Townsend was a farmer and statesmen in Marshall, Michigan. In August, 1863, he enlisted in the military service during the Civil War and served as a soldier in the 11th Michigan Cavalry until he was taken prisoner by the Confederate army and confined three months in Libby prison. He was discharged on 12 July 1865 for injuries sustained during imprisonment. He married Emma Franson on Feb. 1, 1871 and later died of typhoid fever in September 9, 1885.
