John Burgess: “This is my father and mother." The photograph was taken in Cincinnati. When asked how his father came to live in Grand Rapids, John explained: "My father was a messenger for a federal judge and Michigan was in the fifth circuit of the Federal system. The federal judge used to sit in Grand Rapids. So he came to Grand Rapids and my father was there as a messenger for the judge, and while he was there he met my mother and they married in Grand Rapids.”
