Description:

View of the coastal village of Joal in Upper Guinea (located in present day Senegal). A group of tribesmen on horseback armed with bows, arrows and spears can be seen in the foreground. To the right of this group two men on horseback appear to be leading a naked captive towards a throng of villagers near a large settlement of huts. On the left-hand side there are two men swimming, a man in a boat and a herd of water buffalo while on the right-hand side a European slave ship can be seen approaching the shore.; Original drawing made by C.B. Wadström during a journey to the coast of West Africa in 1787.
