Virgin Islands surveyed in 1774.

Virgin Islands surveyed in 1774.

Description:

Finished, pen and ink outline map showing the route of Admiral William Parry, commander in chief of the fleet of the Leeward Islands. Some soundings and anchorages marked.; This map accompanied the report by John Purcell, "An account of the Virgin Islands," dated London, 7 November 1768, which is bound with the Strachey Papers. Since the bulk of the papers in this group are in answer to a questionnaire issued by Lord Dartmouth in 1773 to the various American colonies, this report is probably included in the Strachey copies only because it deals with the West Indies.; Brun guide and old map card identify this map as from the Strachey Papers, while penciled note on map itself suggests it is from Dartmouth Papers.; Route of Parry's fleet illustrated with small, detailed figures of ships.; Cartouche bordered by military trophies.

Date Issued: 1774.
