Woman learning to hold a rifle during Women's Home Guard training
A woman learning how to handle a rifle from a Michigan veteran. The veteran wears a unfirm and cap with patch which reads: Veterans of Foreign Wars. The unidentified woman was part of the Women's Home Guard military company of Kalamazoo. According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, women received military training (including the use of firearms) each Wednesday evening by Kalamazoo military men, former members of the Michigan National Guard, and former officers of military units during the World War. After the drills, the women would go through a first aid course. The photograph was taken for Detroit Free Press Company. Note: There is a texture on parts of the negative that were not part of the original photograph. This does not minimize the value of the imagery.
